Drain Fly Treatment
What Was Applied Today & What to Expect
What We Applied Today
🧹
Physical Biofilm Removal
The source drain was identified using the tape test and the organic biofilm lining the pipe walls was physically scrubbed out with a drain brush. This removes the breeding material where larvae develop. Hot water flush followed to clear dislodged residue.
🧼
Enzyme Drain Gel Application
Enzyme-based drain gel was applied to dissolve remaining biofilm that brushing alone cannot reach. The enzymes contain naturally occurring bacteria that digest organic matter. Continue nightly applications for 5–7 consecutive nights to fully clear the pipe.
🔎
Secondary Source Inspection
All other potential breeding sites were inspected: sump pump pit, AC condensate drip pan, floor drains, garbage disposal, and overflow drain holes. Any additional biofilm sources found were treated.
What to Expect
📉
Adults continue for several days
You will still see adult drain flies for several days after treatment — this is normal. Existing adults live 2–3 weeks and cannot be eliminated with sprays. With the biofilm removed, no new larvae are developing so the population is declining.
📈
Numbers drop steadily over 1–2 weeks
As existing adults die off naturally and no new ones emerge from the cleaned drain, sightings should decrease steadily. Most clients see complete resolution within 7–14 days of biofilm removal.
Fully resolved within 2–3 weeks
With biofilm removed and enzyme maintenance in place, drain flies should be completely gone within 2–3 weeks. Monthly enzyme treatments prevent reaccumulation and keep the problem from returning.
Your Role in This Treatment
  • Apply enzyme drain gel nightly for the next 5–7 nights. Pour into the treated drain at bedtime so it sits undisturbed for 6–8 hours.
  • Run water through every drain in the house at least once per week — especially guest bathrooms, basement floor drains, and laundry sinks.
  • Do NOT pour bleach down drains — bleach does not remove biofilm and interferes with the enzyme treatment.
  • After the initial treatment cycle, apply enzyme gel once per month as preventive maintenance.
✓ Safe for Family & Pets
Enzyme drain gel contains naturally occurring bacteria — non-toxic and safe for all pipe types and septic systems. Physical brushing uses no chemicals. No insecticide sprays or foggers were used anywhere in the home.

Drain flies are still appearing after 2–3 weeks. This means a secondary breeding source was missed — we’ll return to tape-test all drains and inspect sump pits, AC pans, and hidden moisture sources.
