Your home, protected.
Naturally.
Proven botanical pest management methods for Maryland homes — with escalating options customized to fit your tolerance, preferences, and comfort level.
Pest control that respects the home it protects.
Our environmentally responsible pest control treats your home like the living environment it is — full of children, pets, pollinators, and the people who matter most to you.
We walk you through your options — including targeted EPA-registered products that can speed up results. You choose what is right for your home.
Integrated pest management means fixing what's attracting pests — entry points, moisture, harborage. Less product needed. Better, longer-lasting results.
You receive a written care card listing exactly what was applied, where, and what to expect. No mystery formulas. Ever.
Four steps to a pest-free home.
Every visit follows the same careful, documented process — so you always know exactly what happened in your home.
We inspect room by room — identifying pest pressure, entry points, and moisture issues. You'll know exactly what we found before we apply anything.
We seal cracks, gaps, and entry points that let pests in — around pipes, vents, doors, and foundations. Exclusion is the most effective long-term treatment.
Plant and mineral-based sprays and food-grade dusts applied precisely where pests live and travel. We walk you through your options — you decide how far to go. Always targeted, never broadcast.
You receive a written care card documenting everything we did. We monitor for activity between visits and adjust our approach based on what we find.
Jim came out for the inspection and actually took the time to explain what he uses and why. I always know exactly what was done. Highly recommend for any family looking for a safer option.
Protection built around your home — disclosed on every visit.
Three plans. Same principles across all three: we start with the least-toxic products that will work, we treat inside and outside, we name every product on your care card, and we don't lock you into a long contract. If pest activity returns between scheduled visits, we come back at no charge. Premier additionally includes our full rodent program under Maryland Category 7D — mechanical-first IPM, exclusion-led, with escalation only on your written consent.
Pricing assumes a typical home up to 3,500 sq ft on a lot up to 1 acre. Crawl space service is included with Premier — available as a custom add-on for other plans. Larger or non-standard properties may require a custom quote, confirmed at inspection.
No long-term contract. No cancellation fee. 3-month minimum commitment, then cancel anytime — we'll refund any unused portion of a prepaid year.
Initial inspection & first treatment: $199 $99 with any monthly subscription. Billing starts the following month. 3-month commitment, cancel anytime after.
Initial inspection & first treatment: waived with annual prepay. 12 months of coverage charged today, auto-renews yearly.
Initial inspection & first treatment: waived with 2-year prepay. Single charge for 24 months of coverage — does not auto-renew.

A single mouse or rat? Single-visit mechanical rodent removal is available as an add-on at any plan tier. For ongoing rodent activity or any chronic pressure, upgrade to Premier — our full rodent program includes continuous monitoring stations, exclusion-first IPM, and escalation only with your written consent. Rodent work is a categorically different licensed service line (MDA Cat 7D) and is significantly under-served by single-visit removal.
Every plan includes a minimum number of visits per year, sized for your home's actual pest pressure, plus unlimited free return visits between scheduled treatments and our universal satisfaction guarantee. View Service Agreement

Designed for the
Chesapeake Bay watershed.
We manage pests with the Bay watershed in mind. Our primary toolkit is botanical and mineral-based — biodegradable in 24–48 hours and lower-impact for the waterways and pollinators that share our backyards. Any escalation to EPA-registered products is yours to approve in writing.

Maryland families who made the switch.
Awesome experience! They were super responsive, came exactly when they said they would, and walked me through the exactly what they were doing to handle our midges problem on our balcony. I would highly recommend!
Jim was very thorough and personable. I'm grateful I found him.
Jim came out for the inspection and actually took the time to explain what he uses and why. I always know exactly what was done. Highly recommend for any family looking for a safer option.
Built on a belief that less harm is always possible.
Herbal Shield was founded on a simple conviction: Maryland families deserve pest control that starts with the least-toxic approach — and delivers results no matter what it takes.
"I've always been someone who reads the label. When I started growing food at home, I got serious about what I was willing to put in the soil — and that mindset carried into the rest of the house. Every product we use is one I've personally researched and tested. If I wouldn't use it in my own home, we don't use it in yours."

Honest answers to common questions.
Yes. Peppermint oil is a powerful repellent and contact agent. Professional-grade diatomaceous earth works through a physical mechanism that pests can't develop resistance to. Borax-based baits are an industry standard. If you'd like faster results, we can recommend targeted EPA-registered options. We'll explain everything and you decide.
Significant improvement within 3–7 days for most situations. Ant baits typically show results in 24–48 hours. Flea programs take 2–3 weeks because the lifecycle requires patience — we explain this clearly at every visit so you know exactly what to expect. Tick reduction programs show results over 3–4 weeks as habitat modification takes effect.
This is actually a good sign. Botanical treatments flush pests out of their hiding spots in walls and crevices. You may notice increased activity for 1–2 days — it means the product is reaching exactly the right places. Things should quiet down noticeably after 3–5 days.
Botanical spray areas are safe when fully dry — typically 2–4 hours with good ventilation. DE areas are safe immediately but we recommend keeping children from playing in treated carpet for 24 hours. Exact re-entry times are noted on your care card.
Yes. Our primary products — cedar oil, peppermint oil, professional-grade diatomaceous earth, and boric acid — are EPA 25(b) exempt or EPA-registered minimum-risk and classified as minimal risk. If we ever recommend a different product, we'll show you the label and explain everything before applying. You're always in control. Pets can return to treated areas once dry, typically 30–60 minutes. Bait stations are enclosed and placed in areas pets can't access.
With our approach, yes. We never spray open surfaces — all treatments go into cracks, crevices, and enclosed voids where people don't contact them. We start with EPA 25(b) exempt products that have the lowest risk profile available. For nurseries and infant rooms, we use only sealed bait stations and physical exclusion. If we think a different product would help, we'll walk you through the options and you decide what you're comfortable with. Always consult your healthcare provider with specific concerns.
Always. Essential oils including cedar and peppermint are acutely toxic to fish. We always cover and seal fish tanks before any spray treatment, turn off tank pumps, and confirm ventilation before allowing you to uncover — minimum 2 hours. This is a non-negotiable step at every single visit.
We take an IPM (Integrated Pest Management) approach: we treat when it will actually make a difference rather than on autopilot. Your scheduled visits are set by plan — quarterly on Essential, every 8 weeks on Complete, monthly on Premier. Within that cadence we time each visit around your home's high-pressure seasons (spring ant emergence, fall stink bug migration, peak mosquito) rather than a rigid calendar day. Plus unlimited free return visits between scheduled treatments if pests come back.
You start with an initial inspection and first treatment. The inspection fee is $199 standalone, $99 with a monthly subscription, or waived ($0) with annual or 2-year prepay. With monthly billing, your subscription doesn't begin until the following month. With annual prepay (15% discount, auto-renews yearly) or 2-year prepay (20% discount, one-time charge — does not auto-renew), the subscription portion is paid up front and the inspection fee is waived. From there, your subscription is year-round coverage — not just visits. It includes: ongoing monitoring and treatment of your property, unlimited free return visits if pests come back, access to your personal customer portal with property map and care guides, botanical-based EPA 25(b) exempt products as a first line of defense, and a technician who knows your specific home.
Yes. If pests return between your scheduled visits, we come back at no charge. Our goal is a protected home, and we stand behind our work. Most homes see significant reduction in pest activity after 2–3 treatment cycles.
Minimal prep: clear items from directly against baseboards in heavy pest areas, and make sure the technician can access under sinks and behind appliances. No need to leave the house, bag food, or cover furniture. We'll explain everything specific to your situation before we start.
Exterior botanical treatments need about 2 hours to dry and bond. If rain is expected, we'll time the application or focus on protected areas like under eaves, around door frames, and in covered entry points. We'll return to treat exposed areas at no charge if needed.
Store-bought surface sprays often make things worse — they push pests deeper into walls and scatter them into new areas. Our professional-grade botanical-based products are applied directly into cracks and voids where they're most effective. If you've already used store-bought products, let us know — it helps us tailor our approach.
Bti larvicide treatment of standing water, source-reduction recommendations and mechanical source reduction (gutter clearing, container removal), and short-duration botanical perimeter knock-down sprays. We don't fog or mist for adult mosquitoes — that requires Maryland MDA Category 7C licensing, which we don't currently hold. Customers wanting yard fogging are referred to a 7C-licensed company. Plan on ongoing seasonal management May through October — not a 100% mosquito-free yard.
No. Active termite treatment, soil drench applications, and termite bait station installation (such as Sentricon) require Maryland MDA Category 7B licensing, which we don't currently hold. What we do offer for termites is comprehensive inspection (with NPMA-33 documentation when requested) and preventive borate wood treatment on accessible untreated wood. If we find active termite activity during your inspection, we document the finding in writing and refer you to a 7B-licensed termite contractor.
Realistically, 6 to 10 weeks for full elimination using our botanical-and-mechanical approach: silica-gel desiccant (CimeXa), bedbug interceptors, HEPA vacuum-assisted mechanical removal, and a structured customer prep protocol. The customer handles in-home heat steps — laundering bedding and clothing on highest heat, freezing small non-launderable items — per the checklist we provide. Customer compliance with weekly laundering, decluttering, and not moving infested items between rooms is required for that timeline. If you want faster elimination — typically 3 to 5 weeks — you can ask us about IPM escalation: with your written consent, we can apply targeted EPA-registered products under your service agreement. The choice is always yours.
Greater Baltimore and Washington DC metro areas — including Bethesda, Silver Spring, Columbia, Ellicott City, Annapolis, and Towson. We serve Montgomery County, Prince George's County, Howard County, Anne Arundel County, Baltimore County, and Baltimore City. Not sure? Call us — we may be able to accommodate you even outside our standard area.
Our pricing is competitive and straightforward. Our Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach — fixing root causes rather than treating symptoms repeatedly — means most clients need fewer visits over time. We offer free quotes and give honest assessments of what your situation actually requires.
The honest answer takes a minute because it's not one number — it's a layered program. Our outdoor botanical spray holds up 2–4 weeks depending on rain, which is shorter than a synthetic pyrethroid barrier. What lasts longer is the rest of what we do on every visit: perimeter granular baits that stay active 60–90 days, silica-gel dust at entry points that stays active for years (documented at 18+ months in University of Kentucky field trials), interior colony-level baits that eliminate the source rather than just repelling it, and physical exclusion of the entry points pests use. That stacked approach plus more frequent visits than a chain does — bimonthly on Complete, monthly on Premier — is how we deliver durable protection without synthetic pyrethroid residual. If you specifically want a longer-lasting synthetic spray, we can escalate to a labeled residual product with your written consent — but we default to the botanical program because it's what our brand stands for.
No. Every plan has a 3-month minimum commitment so we have time to actually see whether our approach is working, and after that you can cancel any time. We don't charge cancellation fees. If you prepaid annually or for two years and cancel mid-term, we refund the unused portion. This is different from most national chains — most bundle a 12-month contract with a $175–$500 cancellation clawback in the fine print. We don't.
Call or email us — that's it. No hoops, no "retention specialist," no fee. If you're inside the first 3 months, we honor the minimum commitment. After that, cancellation is immediate. If you prepaid a year and cancel at month 7, we refund the remaining 5 months. If you have specific feedback about what didn't work, we'd love to hear it — but there's no pressure to explain.
Two structural differences worth knowing. First: chemistry disclosure. National chains and most green franchises will not tell you what active ingredient is in the tank — the industry standard behind the "green" or "eco" marketing is usually a synthetic pyrethroid like bifenthrin. We publish the actives on your care card after every visit. Second: contract structure. National chains typically require a 12-month commitment with a $175–$500 cancellation fee. We don't. If you want to know exactly what any specific competitor uses, we're happy to walk you through what's publicly available — we just don't play the "you'd have to call to find out" game.
