German Cockroach
Small (12–15mm), tan/light brown with two dark stripes behind head. The most common indoor species. Proliferates rapidly — a single female can produce 30,000 offspring per year. Prefers warm, humid areas near food and water. Primary allergen source for asthma sufferers.
American Cockroach
Large (35–40mm), reddish-brown with a yellowish figure-8 pattern on the thorax. Often called "Palmetto Bug." Prefers warm, damp spaces — basements, boiler rooms, floor drains, sewers. Less prolific than German but can infest large areas of a structure quickly.
Signs of Activity
Small, dark fecal pellets (like ground pepper) in cabinet corners, under appliances, along baseboards. Musty odor in heavy infestations. Egg cases (oothecae) — brown, ribbed capsules — tucked in hidden corners. Live sightings during the day often indicate heavy pressure.
Health Impact
Cockroach allergens are a leading trigger for childhood asthma and allergic rhinitis. They spread 33+ known bacterial pathogens including Salmonella and E. coli by contaminating food surfaces. Any sighting warrants immediate action — our threshold is zero tolerance indoors.

Confirm Species with Sticky Traps
Place 2 sticky traps per room in corners along walls, under sinks, and behind appliances. Check after 24 hours. Species ID determines bait selection — German roaches respond differently than American. The trap count also establishes baseline pressure severity.

Eliminate Food, Water & Harborage
Fix all leaks immediately. Clean grease from under and behind stove. Empty trash daily. Store food in sealed hard containers. Remove clutter, cardboard boxes, and paper bags — cockroaches use these as egg-laying harborage.

Seal Entry Points
Seal gaps larger than 1/16 inch — German cockroaches fit through cracks that barely seem visible. Caulk the gap between the countertop and backsplash, around pipe penetrations, and behind the refrigerator motor housing.

Vacuum Harborage Areas
Vacuum all fecal deposits, egg cases, and shed skins thoroughly before applying any product. This removes pheromone attractants and egg cases. Dispose the vacuum bag immediately in a sealed outdoor container.

Apply Gel Bait in Harborage Zones
Apply pea-sized gel bait dots in cracks, under appliances, inside cabinet hinges, and behind baseboards — wherever fecal evidence was found. Never apply bait in open areas. Refresh weekly and rotate bait products every 4–6 weeks to prevent aversion.

Apply Boric Acid & DE in Voids
Puff thin boric acid or silica aerogel layers into wall voids, under dishwashers, inside motor housings of refrigerators, and behind outlet covers. Keep dry. Do not combine with gel bait in the same location — boric acid deactivates gel baits.

Monthly Monitoring & Maintenance
Replace sticky traps monthly. If trap counts increase, re-evaluate sanitation and bait freshness. A reduction of 80–90% in 30 days indicates treatment is working. Zero captures for 60+ days = resolution.
Prevention & Cultural Controls
Plumbing & Leak Elimination
Fix all leaking pipes, dripping faucets, and condensation sources immediately — moisture is the #1 cockroach attractant. Check under sinks, behind dishwashers, and around refrigerator water lines. Seal plumbing penetrations through walls with hydraulic cement or foam.
Food & Waste Management
Store all food in hard-sided sealed containers — not bags or cardboard. Empty indoor trash nightly and keep bins with tight-fitting lids. Clean behind appliances regularly. Never leave dishes in the sink overnight. Rinse recyclables before binning. Pet food must be stored and served in sealed containers.
Exclusion & Clutter Reduction
Seal gaps around pipes, electrical conduit, and floor drains with silicone caulk. Eliminate cardboard boxes (cockroach harborage and egg site). Reduce clutter under sinks and in cabinets. Inspect all incoming grocery bags and cardboard boxes — a common entry point for German cockroaches.
Application Techniques
Gel Bait — The Primary German Cockroach Tool
  1. Apply pea-sized dots — 1/4 teaspoon maximum per placement. Larger amounts waste product and dry out faster.
  2. Place in cracks and crevices at the interface of surfaces: where walls meet floors, inside cabinet hinges, under the refrigerator motor, inside the dishwasher door gap.
  3. Never place bait in open areas — cockroaches feed in hidden harborage zones, not open surfaces.
  4. Do NOT apply cleaning products near bait — repellents and scents reduce palatability.
  5. Refresh every 5–7 days in high-pressure infestations, every 2 weeks for maintenance.
  6. Rotate bait products every 4–6 weeks to prevent bait aversion (when cockroaches learn to avoid a specific formula).
Boric Acid Dust — Void & Motor Housing Treatment
  1. Use a bellows duster for precision. Target: inside wall voids, refrigerator motor housing, dishwasher motor cavity, under range, behind outlet covers in kitchen and bathrooms.
  2. Apply an extremely thin layer — barely visible to the eye. Cockroaches avoid piles but walk through fine films, picking up the material on their legs and antennae.
  3. Keep strictly dry — moisture deactivates boric acid instantly.
  4. Do NOT apply near gel bait placements — boric acid repels cockroaches from bait stations.
  5. Reapply after any moisture event or cleaning of the treated area.
Sticky Trap Monitoring — Place Before & After Treatment

Place 2 traps per room before any treatment to establish baseline capture rates. Place in corners, flush against walls, under sinks, and beside appliances. After treatment, continue monthly monitoring — rising trap counts after 30 days indicate a treatment gap that needs adjustment.

Never Broadcast Spray: Broad pyrethroid sprays cause cockroaches to scatter into wall voids and neighboring units, dispersing the population and making resolution far harder. No surface spraying in kitchens, bathrooms, or food-prep areas — ever. Targeted gel bait and crack-and-crevice dust are the only approved methods.
Multi-Unit Buildings Require Neighbor Coordination: German cockroach infestations in apartments or row homes cannot be fully resolved without treating adjacent units. Coordinate with property management for simultaneous treatment in connected spaces. A single treated unit will re-infest within weeks from untreated neighbors sharing plumbing and wall voids.
