Pet-Safe Pest Control in Maryland

Your pets are family. They sleep on your floors, press against your baseboards, and explore every corner of your home. Herbal Shield uses botanical products applied only into cracks and crevices — never on the surfaces where your dogs, cats, and other companions spend their time.

Why It Matters

Your Pets Live Where Conventional Pest Control Sprays

Dogs lie against baseboards. Cats walk along floor edges. Both lick their paws. Conventional pest control sprays synthetic pyrethroids directly onto these surfaces — the exact places your pets contact most. Pyrethroids are synthetic nerve agents, and cats are particularly sensitive to them because they cannot metabolize certain compounds the way dogs and humans can.

Herbal Shield eliminates this concern entirely. Our crack-and-crevice application method puts products inside wall voids, behind baseboards, and into cabinet seams — not on the surfaces your pets touch. The floors and baseboards stay clean because we never treat them.

Our Approach

How We Keep Your Pets Safe

No Surface Spraying

We never spray floors, baseboards, or any surface your pets walk on or lie against. Every product goes into cracks, crevices, and enclosed voids where pests live — not where your pets do.

EPA 25(b) Exempt Products

Our routine products use plant-derived essential oils and food-grade diatomaceous earth. No synthetic pyrethroids, no organophosphates, no neonicotinoids. The lowest risk category the EPA designates.

Food-Grade DE

Our diatomaceous earth is food-grade — the same material used in food manufacturing. It works mechanically, not chemically, and is applied into enclosed voids where pets cannot access it.

Tamper-Resistant Bait Stations

All bait stations are sealed and tamper-resistant, placed in locations inaccessible to pets — behind appliances, inside wall voids, in cabinet corners. Pets cannot open them or access the bait inside.

Aquarium Protocol

Fish are extremely sensitive to airborne chemicals. We cover tanks, turn off air pumps, and avoid spraying within 6 feet of aquariums. For rooms with large setups, we use only bait stations and enclosed DE — no sprays.

Pet-Specific Re-Entry Times

Essential oil spray into crevices: keep pets out for 30 minutes while it dries. Diatomaceous earth in voids: no wait. Sealed bait stations: no wait. We document everything on your care card.

What Pet Owners Say

Chosen by Families Who Refuse to Compromise

“We have three dogs and I refused to use traditional pest control after reading what pyrethroids do to aquatic life. Herbal Shield was the answer. Their technician actually walked me through every product label and showed me exactly where things were going. My dogs were back in the room within 30 minutes.”

Special Protocols

Aquarium & Fish Tank Safety

Fish are far more sensitive than dogs or cats to airborne chemicals. Essential oils, even natural ones, can settle on water surfaces and harm aquatic life. This is something most pest control companies never mention, let alone plan for.

Herbal Shield has a specific aquarium protocol that we follow in every home with fish tanks or aquariums.

Our Aquarium Protocol

  • Cover the tank with a towel or plastic wrap before treating the room
  • Turn off air pumps and protein skimmers to prevent intake of airborne particles
  • No spray applications within 6 feet of the aquarium
  • In rooms with large or sensitive setups, use only sealed bait stations and enclosed DE — no sprays at all
  • Wait 2 hours before uncovering the tank and restarting air pumps
  • Document the protocol on your care card for your records

Essential Oils and Cats: What You Should Know

Cats lack certain liver enzymes (glucuronyl transferase) that metabolize some essential oil compounds. This is a legitimate concern, and we take it seriously. Here is why our approach is different from diffusing essential oils in your living space.

When essential oils are applied into cracks and crevices — inside wall voids, behind baseboards, within cabinet toe kicks — the product is physically inaccessible to your cat. Once the spray dries (about 30 minutes), the active compounds are bound to surfaces inside enclosed spaces that your cat cannot reach, lick, or inhale in meaningful concentrations.

This is fundamentally different from diffusing essential oils into the ambient air of your home, which we would never recommend around cats. Our crack-and-crevice method confines the product to pest harborage areas, not your cat's living space.

We always ask about cats during the initial consultation so we can tailor our product selection and application strategy accordingly.

Common Questions

Pet Safety & Pest Control FAQ

Is pest control safe for dogs?

Yes. We use EPA 25(b) exempt products applied only into cracks, crevices, and enclosed voids — never on surfaces dogs walk on or lie against. Keep dogs out of the treated room for 30 minutes while the spray dries. Sealed bait stations are tamper-resistant and placed where dogs cannot reach them.

Is pest control safe for cats?

Yes. While cats are sensitive to certain essential oils, our crack-and-crevice method confines products to enclosed spaces cats cannot access. Once the spray dries (30 minutes), the compounds are bound inside crevices. We always ask about cats during consultation to tailor our approach.

What about aquariums and fish tanks?

We have a specific aquarium protocol: cover the tank, turn off air pumps, no sprays within 6 feet. For rooms with large setups, we use only sealed bait stations and enclosed DE. We wait 2 hours before uncovering the tank.

How long should I keep my pet out of the treated room?

30 minutes for rooms treated with essential oil spray (applied into crevices, not surfaces). No waiting for rooms treated only with diatomaceous earth in voids or sealed bait stations. Your care card documents specific timing for every area.

Why are pyrethroids dangerous to pets?

Pyrethroids are synthetic nerve agents. Cats are particularly vulnerable because they lack the liver enzymes to metabolize certain compounds. Dogs can experience tremors and skin irritation from surface contact. Pyrethroids are also extremely toxic to aquatic life. Herbal Shield does not use synthetic pyrethroids for routine pest control.

What areas of Maryland do you serve?

We serve Montgomery County, Howard County, Anne Arundel County, Prince George's County, Baltimore County, and Baltimore City.
